Indian cricket team captain Suryakumar Yadav has announced that he will donate his entire Asia Cup 2025 match fees to the Indian Armed Forces and the families of victims of the Pahalgam terror attack.
₹28 Lakh Donation
Players in India’s T20 team earn ₹4 lakh per match. Since India played 7 matches in the Asia Cup, Suryakumar will be donating a total of ₹28 lakh.
Sharing his decision on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote:
Asia Cup 2025 Final
India defeated Pakistan by five wickets in the Asia Cup 2025 final. With this, India also completed a clean sweep against Pakistan, winning all three matches in the tournament.
But the victory was not without controversy. During the final ceremony, the Indian team refused to accept the trophy from PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi, who is also the President of the Asian Cricket Council. The presentation ended abruptly after the mementos and individual awards were distributed.
Refusal to Shake Hands
Throughout the tournament, the Indian team also chose not to shake hands with Pakistani players after matches. Surya explained that this was done as a mark of respect to the soldiers and victims of Pahalgam.
At a press conference, he said:
“Some things in life are bigger than cricket. Our soldiers inspire us every day, and we wanted to show solidarity with them.”
ICC Action and Fine
Suryakumar’s strong stand also brought ICC into the picture. After Pakistan lodged a formal complaint, the ICC fined him 30% of his match fee for mixing politics with the game. The decision came after a hearing by match referee Richie Richardson.
However, the BCCI has appealed against the fine, saying Surya was only expressing his respect for the Armed Forces and victims of a terror attack. Surya has also pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Despite the controversy, fans across India praised Suryakumar for his heartfelt gesture. Many called him a true patriot who showed that cricket is not just about trophies, but also about standing with the country.
