The Incident
In Azamgarh’s Sidhari area, just opposite the Ramlila ground, a tragedy unfolded on September 25. Seven-year-old Shazeb Ali, son of Mukarram Ali, went missing while playing. Despite frantic searches by his family, he could not be traced. Later, his lifeless body was found stuffed in a sack and tied with a wire — a sight that shook the entire locality.
In tears, his mother said, “My little boy never used to step outside. He would often tell me, ‘Mumma, when I grow up, I will become successful.’ I have lost my innocent child.”
Family’s Allegations
Relatives alleged that police failed to act on time. According to Shazeb’s paternal aunt, officers initially refused to file a missing person complaint and asked the family to wait 24 hours. “My nephew’s throat was slit. We demand strictest punishment and demolition of the accused’s house,” she said.
Police Statement and Encounter
The accused was identified as Sailendra Nigam alias Mantu, a neighbour of the victim’s family. Azamgarh SP Dr. Anil Kumar confirmed that the family had even received a ransom call before the body was discovered.
Police launched a manhunt and soon cornered the suspects. In a joint operation by Sidhari and Mubarakpur police, two accused — Sailendra Nigam and Raja Nigam — were injured and arrested in an encounter. Officers recovered two pistols, three live cartridges, and three used cartridges from the scene.
According to SSP Azamgarh Dr. Anil Kumar, Sailendra Nigam sustained two bullet injuries, while Raja Nigam was hit by one bullet during the police confrontation. Both were taken into custody and are under treatment, while further investigation continues.

Raja Nigam and Sandeep Nigam, prime accused in the brutal murder of 7-year-old Shazeb Ali.
SP Anil Kumar stated:
“Initial investigation suggests an old business and land dispute between the families. The case is under forensic examination, and strict action will follow.”
Public Anger and Security
The brutal killing has triggered widespread outrage. Locals and community members have demanded demolition of the accused’s house, with calls for justice spreading under the hashtag #JusticeForShazeb on social media.
To prevent communal flare-ups, a heavy police deployment has been made in the area.
