The name Neel Parmar, also known by his aliases Vipul and Vimal, has gripped Gujarat this week. The 32-year-old, branded by many as a “psycho killer,” was gunned down by police during a crime scene reconstruction near the Narmada canal in Gandhinagar on Wednesday evening.
According to Gujarat DGP Vikas Sahay (statement to The Hindu), Parmar snatched a service weapon from a patrol officer and opened fire while attempting to flee. He was killed in the confrontation, while one constable was injured and hospitalized, as reported.
The Birthday Murder That Sparked Outrage
Parmar’s end came just days after a shocking attack near the Ambhapur Narmada Canal (Sept 19–20).
- A couple celebrating a birthday in their car was ambushed.
- Vaibhav Manvani (25) was stabbed to death after resisting a robbery attempt.
- His friend Astha was seriously injured and remains under treatment.
This brutal assault triggered public outrage across Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, leading to a statewide manhunt.
A Disturbing Crime Trail
Police investigations revealed Parmar’s dark history of canal-side crimes:
- Linked to a 2019 Adalaj attack that killed one youth and injured others.
- Confessed involvement in at least 10 criminal cases, including murders and robberies.
- Targeted couples near canals, allegedly fueled by mental health struggles, family disputes, and failed marriages.
On Sept 23, surveillance footage and ground tracking led police to arrest him in Rajkot. He was handed over to Gandhinagar LCB, setting the stage for the fatal encounter the next day.
Fear Across the City
For weeks, locals lived in fear as reports of late-night canal assaults mounted. The “psycho killer” narrative spread fast, shaking public confidence in safety around isolated stretches.
Police have now assured that Parmar’s death marks the end of this crime wave — but it also raises tough questions about how repeat offenders evade detection until tragedy strikes.
